Section 01
Introduction & Scope
Welcome to MapChat (“MapChat,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). MapChat is a social platform available at mapchat.social and through our mobile application, enabling users to discover, rate, and share information about venues such as bars, restaurants, and other establishments.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over your data. This policy applies to all users who access or use our website, mobile app, and related services (collectively, the “Services”).
By creating an account or using our Services, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with our practices, please do not use our Services.
Section 02
Our Principle: You Are Not the Product
At MapChat, we hold a foundational belief that shapes every decision we make about your data: our users should never be the product. Your personal information exists to power your experience — not to be packaged, monetized, or traded behind your back.
The MapChat Data Promise
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with data brokers or advertising networks. We do not use your data to build profiles for anyone other than you. We will never work with data brokers — period.
Venue partner sharing: When you visit and interact with a venue through MapChat, we share relevant information with that venue so they can serve you better — just like being a regular. If a venue belongs to a chain or group, the parent entity may see your activity across their own locations — but never at unrelated venues. You can opt out anytime. Venue partners cannot resell your data.
Our line in the sand: If your personal data were ever sold to a data broker or similar entity — something we have committed to never doing — you would be entitled to compensation for the value of that data. We believe that if your information is treated as a commodity, you deserve to share in that value. This commitment exists as a safeguard and a statement of principle, even though we intend for it to never be triggered.
If we introduce personalized advertising, it will be designed to make your life better — surfacing genuinely useful, relevant content like deals at venues you love — not to extract value from you. You will always have clear controls to opt out, and we will never let third-party ad networks track you inside MapChat.
This is not a legal technicality. It is a matter of principle that guides how we build MapChat and how we intend to operate for the long term.
Section 03

Section 04
How We Use Your Information
We use the personal information we collect for the following business purposes:
- Provide and operate the Services — to create and maintain your account, enable check-ins, display venue information, and facilitate social features.
- Personalize your experience — to recommend venues, display relevant content, and tailor the app to your preferences and location.
- Improve venue data quality — to process your feedback, corrections, and suggestions about venue information such as happy hours, events, and amenities.
- Operate trivia and games — to facilitate gameplay, track scores, maintain leaderboards, and provide rewards or achievements.
- Analyze and improve our Services — to understand how users interact with MapChat, identify bugs, and develop new features.
- Communicate with you — to send service-related notices, respond to your inquiries, and provide customer support.
- Ensure safety and security — to detect fraud, enforce our Terms of Service, and protect users and venue partners.
- Comply with legal obligations — to meet applicable laws, regulations, and legal processes.
Section 05
Sharing & Disclosure
As stated in Our Principle, we believe your data belongs to you. MapChat is built and operated in-house. We do not sell your personal information to third parties, and we never will without your explicit opt-in consent and fair compensation. We may share your information only in the following limited circumstances:
- With other MapChat users: Your public profile, check-ins, reviews, photos, and gameplay activity may be visible to other users in accordance with your privacy settings.
- Service providers: We may engage trusted service providers who assist us in operating our Services (e.g., hosting, customer support, email delivery). These providers are contractually bound to use your data only as directed by us and to maintain appropriate security measures.
- Legal compliance: We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of MapChat, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will provide notice before your personal information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
Third-Party Data Sharing — Venue Partners Only
The only third parties MapChat shares data with are venue partners — the bars, restaurants, and small businesses listed on our platform.
How Venue Sharing Works
When you have a direct relationship with a venue — for example, you check in, leave feedback, or interact with the venue through MapChat — we share information relevant to that relationship with the venue. This works the same way it does at any restaurant or bar you visit regularly: the staff gets to know you, remembers your preferences, and can offer a better experience because of it. MapChat helps facilitate that connection digitally.
Information shared with a venue partner may include your name, visit history at that venue, preferences, feedback you’ve provided about their establishment, and other details relevant to your relationship with them. This is how MapChat creates value for both you and the small businesses you visit — and it’s a core part of how our platform works.
A few important points:
- Relationship-based: We only share your information with venues you’ve actually interacted with through MapChat. A venue you’ve never visited or engaged with will not receive your data.
- Scoped to your venues: A venue only sees your activity and relationship with them. If a venue is part of a chain or restaurant group, the parent entity may see your activity across their own locations — but never at unrelated venues outside their group.
- Easy opt-out: You can opt out of venue sharing at any time through your privacy settings, either globally or for specific venues. If you opt out, we will stop sharing your identifiable information with that venue going forward.
- No resale: Venue partners are contractually prohibited from selling, licensing, or sharing your information with any other party.
In addition to identifiable data shared with venues you visit, we also provide venues with anonymized, aggregated insights — such as overall visit trends, general feedback themes, and engagement metrics — that cannot identify any individual user.
No Data Brokers. Ever. MapChat will never sell, license, or disclose your personal information to data brokers, data aggregators, advertising networks, or any entity whose business is the resale or redistribution of personal data. This is a permanent commitment, not a temporary policy. Your data will never end up in a database you didn’t agree to be part of.
Personalized Advertising
MapChat may in the future introduce personalized advertising within the app. If we do, our approach will be guided by the same principle that governs everything else we build: it should make your life better, not just generate revenue.
Here is what that means in practice:
- Relevance over volume: Ads will be tailored to surface genuinely useful information — such as a happy hour deal at a venue you already love, or a new restaurant in a neighborhood you frequent — not to bombard you with unrelated products.
- On-device where possible: We will prioritize processing ad personalization on your device or within our own systems, minimizing the personal data that ever leaves MapChat.
- No third-party ad tracking: We will not allow third-party advertising networks to place cookies or tracking pixels within MapChat to build independent profiles on you.
- Transparent controls: You will have clear, accessible settings to control your ad experience — including the ability to opt out of personalized ads entirely and receive only generic, non-targeted content instead.
- Honest labeling: All sponsored or promoted content will be clearly marked so you always know the difference between organic recommendations and paid placements.
If and when personalized advertising is introduced, we will update this policy and notify you in advance so you can review your preferences.
Categories disclosed to service providers in the past 12 months: Account identifiers (for hosting and infrastructure), usage/analytics data (for performance monitoring), and email addresses (for transactional communications). We do not currently share personal information with third parties for their own marketing or advertising purposes.
Section 06
Cookies & Tracking Technologies
MapChat uses cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate and improve our Services. These include:
- Essential cookies: Required for authentication, security, and basic functionality. These cannot be disabled.
- Analytics cookies: Help us understand usage patterns, feature popularity, and app performance. We process this data in-house.
- Preference cookies: Store your settings, such as language preferences and display options.
We do not currently use third-party advertising cookies or tracking pixels. If we introduce personalized advertising in the future, any advertising-related cookies will be clearly disclosed, require your opt-in consent, and be manageable through your privacy settings. We will never allow third-party ad networks to independently track you within MapChat. You may manage cookie preferences through your browser or device settings. Disabling certain cookies may affect the functionality of our Services.
Section 07
Data Retention
We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. Specifically:
- Account data: Retained for the duration of your active account and for up to 30 days following account deletion to allow for recovery.
- Check-in and gameplay data: Retained for the life of your account. Aggregate, de-identified statistics may be retained indefinitely.
- Venue feedback: Contributions to venue data (e.g., corrections, event info) may be retained in de-identified form even after account deletion to maintain data quality for the community.
- Usage and analytics data: Retained in identifiable form for up to 24 months, then aggregated or deleted.
- Legal hold data: May be retained longer if required for legal proceedings or compliance obligations.
Section 08
Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act and the regulations effective January 1, 2026:
Right to Know
You may request that we disclose the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, the purposes for collection, and the categories of third parties with whom we have shared it. Under the 2026 regulations, you may request information collected prior to the most recent 12-month period, going back to January 1, 2022, if we still retain such data. You may specify a date range for your request.
Right to Delete
You may request that we delete the personal information we have collected about you, subject to certain exceptions permitted by law (such as completing a transaction, detecting security incidents, or complying with legal obligations).
Right to Correct
You may request that we correct inaccurate personal information that we maintain about you.
Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing
MapChat does not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA. If this practice changes in the future, we will update this policy and provide a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link as required.
Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information
Where we collect sensitive personal information, you have the right to limit its use to what is necessary to provide the Services. Currently, MapChat does not collect sensitive personal information beyond what is necessary for core functionality.
Right to Non-Discrimination
We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights. We will not deny you services, charge different prices, provide a different quality of service, or suggest you will receive different treatment for exercising your rights.
How to Submit a Request
To exercise any of the rights listed above, you may:
- Email us at privacy@mapchat.social
- Use the “Privacy Settings” section within your account in the MapChat app
We will verify your identity before processing your request. Verification may include confirming your email address and matching account details. We will respond to verifiable consumer requests within 45 days. If we need additional time (up to an additional 45 days), we will notify you in writing and explain the reason for the extension.
Authorized Agents
You may designate an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf. The agent must provide proof of written authorization from you, and we may still require you to verify your identity directly.
Opt-Out Preference Signals: MapChat honors the Global Privacy Control (GPC) and other recognized opt-out preference signals. When we detect such a signal, we will process it as a valid opt-out request and display an “Opt-Out Request Honored” confirmation.
Section 09
Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information
MapChat does not sell your personal information to third parties for monetary or other valuable consideration. We also do not “share” your personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising as defined by the CCPA. We do not and will never work with data brokers, data aggregators, or any entity whose business model involves the resale or redistribution of personal information.
Venue Partner Data
As described in Section 05, MapChat shares information with venue partners you have a direct relationship with — venues you’ve checked into, left feedback for, or otherwise interacted with through MapChat. This sharing is on by default because it’s how venues deliver better hospitality, but you can opt out at any time. Venue partners cannot resell or redistribute any data received through MapChat.
Data Broker Prohibition & Compensation Guarantee
MapChat will never sell, license, or disclose your personal information to data brokers, data aggregators, or any entity whose purpose is the resale or redistribution of personal data. This is a permanent, unconditional commitment.
As a safeguard and a statement of principle: if your personal data were ever sold to a data broker or similar entity in violation of this commitment, you would be entitled to compensation for the value of your data. We believe that if anyone ever treats your information as a commodity to be traded, you deserve to share in that value. We intend for this guarantee to never be triggered — but it exists to hold us accountable.
These commitments go beyond what the CCPA requires. They reflect our belief that your data is yours, and that trust is earned through actions, not disclaimers.
Section 10
Data Security
We implement reasonable and appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. These measures include:
- Encryption of data in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest
- Access controls limiting employee access to personal information on a need-to-know basis
- Regular security assessments and vulnerability testing
- Secure password hashing and storage
- Incident response procedures for potential data breaches
While we take commercially reasonable steps to protect your data, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
Section 11
Location Data Practices
Location data is central to MapChat’s functionality. Here is how we handle it:
- Consent: We collect precise location data only when you grant permission through your device’s operating system. You can revoke this permission at any time through your device settings.
- Purpose: Location data is used to power nearby venue discovery, check-in functionality, and personalized recommendations. We may use Apple Maps or Google Maps services to process location queries such as geocoding and mapping display.
- Storage: Your precise location is used in real-time for venue discovery. Check-in locations (venue-level, not continuous GPS tracking) are stored with your account. We do not continuously track your location in the background unless you explicitly enable this feature.
- De-identification: For analytics purposes, we aggregate and de-identify location data so that it cannot be used to identify individual users.
Section 12
Age Restriction & Children’s Privacy
MapChat is intended solely for users who are 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 18.
If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a user under 18, we will take prompt steps to delete that information and terminate the associated account. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at privacy@mapchat.social.
Section 13
Third-Party Services
MapChat may use the following third-party services in a limited capacity:
Apple Maps / Google Maps: Used for location-related features such as geocoding, map display, and venue positioning. When you use map features, your device may transmit location queries to Apple or Google in accordance with their respective privacy policies. We encourage you to review Google’s Privacy Policy and Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Aside from the mapping services described above and the privacy-first website analytics described below, MapChat’s infrastructure is built and operated in-house. We do not embed third-party advertising networks or social media trackers.
Website analytics (Cloudflare): Our marketing website (mapchat.social) uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-first, cookieless service, to measure aggregate traffic (page views, referrers, approximate country, and device type) and page performance. It sets no cookies, does not track you across other websites, and does not collect information that identifies you personally. We also keep our own aggregate, non-identifying count of how often visitors tap our app-store links.
Section 14
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or for other operational reasons. When we make material changes, we will:
- Update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page
- Provide notice through the MapChat app or via email to your registered address
- Where required by law, obtain your consent before applying changes
We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of MapChat after changes become effective constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
